UCLA Transfer Orientation (2024)

Participating in the entirety of your New Student Orientation is the beginning of a successful start here at UCLA. The day is full of activities that will assist you in learning everything there is to know about the campus, from what courses to take, how to get involved, and much more.

With that in mind, it is our hope that you will take advantage of everything that is offered during your New Student Orientation. Failure to participate in any part of your session is your own responsibility, and can jeopardize proper academic advising and course enrollment.

Your New Student Advisor will make this an individualized experience for you, so the focus of the day is on course and major planning and helping you shape your UCLA goals. Individual appointments occur throughout the day to go over your schedule for Fall Quarter and your other plans while at UCLA.

Orientation concludes with enrolling in your Fall Quarter classes.

Child Care During New Student Orientation

Are you in need of child care during New Student Orientation? Youth programming is available! Through collaboration with theStudents with Dependents Program (SwD) – CCAMPIS Grant and Youth Campus Rec, youth programming is available during select New Student Orientation sessions for students with children. Attending a First Year New Student Orientation Session (2 day program)

If you would like a longer New Student Orientation experience, you can choose to participate in a First Year New Student Orientation session – which is a two-day program – instead of the one-day Transfer New Student Orientation. For a list of sessions and dates available, please visit the First Year New Student Orientation page. If you participate in the First Year New Student Orientation, you will be billed for that session’s fee.

Costs

New Student Orientation Fee: $185

Early Arrival: $60 (if you need to arrive the evening before your session starts)

Staythrough: $70/night
Available for non-California residents in New Student Orientation Session 210 only. Per night charge (includes meals) from your session until campus move-in begins. A Staythrough allows you to stay on campus in the New Student Orientation residence hall and then move into your academic year room as soon as it is available, typically within a couple days after your session. This will take the place of your assigned Move-In time.

Fee to change or cancel session before the deadline: $10
Fee to change or cancel session after deadline/not show to scheduled session: $20

All New Student Orientation fees will be posted on a student’s BruinBill. No payment is due when you make a reservation. Your Statement of Intent to Register (SIR) fee of $250does not cover session fees.

Billing Procedures

The New Student Orientation fee will be billed to your UCLA BruinBill. Your Statement of Intent to Register (SIR) fee of $250 does not cover session fees.

No payment is due when you make a reservation. All session fees will be billed in November and due in December.

Financial Assistance

We know the starting college has many costs and we want to make UCLA accessible for everyone. We hope to be able to provide a partial fee waiver for those in highest financial need, and we are actively working on establishing a process for fee waivers. For now, if you are interested, please mark the box when you make your reservation for New Student Orientation.If funding is available and we can provide this discount, you will be emailed prior to your session’s fee posting on BruinBill.

Regardless of the status of this possible partial fee waiver, anyone attending our programs can request a payment plan to distribute their session fees to be billed in Fall, Winter, and Spring quarters. Please call or email us on the message center to request it.

Ifpaying for New Student Orientation is the only reason preventing you from attending, please contact our office if you need assistance beyond these two solutions.

Payment Policies

• Failure to pay your session fees by the billing deadlines will result in a $20 per month Student Accounting late charge and will result in a hold on your records.
• If you do not arrive by the 10:00 am deadline for your session, your reservation will be canceled and you will be charged a $20 late cancellation fee.
• If you attend New Student Orientation and do not ultimately attend UCLA, you still will be billed for all New Student Orientation fees for services provided.
• If you decide not to attend UCLA after signing up for a New Student Session, you are still responsible for cancelling your session in order to avoid being billed.You must contact New Student & Transition Programs to cancel. If you do not contact New Student & Transition Programs, you will be charged the $20 late cancellation/no show fee.

Reservations begin June 10, 2024 at 12:00 pm (Pacific) via MyUCLA.

In the meantime, please fill out the Pre-Session Planner. This must be completed before you are able to register for an orientation session. The Pre-Session Planner survey provides your New Student Advisor with the information needed to tailor your academic appointment to your needs.

You can fill out your Pre-Session Planner on MyUCLAone day after you submit your Statement of Intent to Register (SIR). Completing your survey before June 10 will allow your orientation reservation process to go smoothly.

Special Considerations for Reservations

If you have a permanent or temporary disability or need which may require advance arrangements for assistance, please contact our office at least 3 weeks before your Orientation session. This includes test-taking assistance for placement exams administered at orientation. For students needing materials in Braille, please consider attending New Student Orientation in August or September and contact our office as soon as you have made a reservation.

Academic Advising

Academic advising is essential for appropriate course enrollment and academic advisors and counseling are an integral part of your New Student Orientation. All incoming students are strongly encouraged to participate in a New Student Orientation so that you have guidance in choosing the appropriate courses for your degree.

If you cannot participate in New Student Orientation, keep in mind that UCLA academic advisors are dedicated to the sessions and may be unable to meet with you until after the summer sessions have ended.

In order to effectively assist you in course enrollment, it will be necessary to know how your transfer courses apply at UCLA. A Degree Audit Report (DAR) provides you with an evaluation of your transfer credit and information about how the courses you completed at other institutions meet requirements at UCLA. It also indicates if you have satisfied the Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC) or have met the UCLA General Education requirements. The information provided on the DAR is critical for you to have when selecting classes for Fall Quarter.

All transcripts of college work taken must be submitted by the stated deadlines on the Undergraduate Admission New Student Checklist . We cannot guarantee you will receive a DAR if you turn in your transcripts late, or change the date of your New Student Session less than two weeks prior to the session. In the event that a DAR is not available at your New Student Orientation, counseling will still be possible if you have copies of all your transcripts and course catalog(s) from your transfer institution(s) with you during your session.

Course Enrollment

A component of New Student Orientation is enrolling in Fall Quarter classes, and many students and their families are concerned about the availability of courses at different session dates. Working with individual departments, seats are saved for incoming students in many of the “high demand” General Education, and/or major courses and dispersed evenly throughout all sessions. There is no guarantee you will get your first choice in every class you would like, but it is an attempt to make this an equitable process. Therefore, it does not matter if you come to the first session or the last, because you will have the same chance of enrolling in one of these courses.

Depending on the courses that you plan on taking at UCLA, or the requirements that you need to fulfill for your major or college, you may need to take one or more of the following placement exams.

Chemistry Diagnostic Test

If you plan to enroll in Chemistry 17, Chemistry 14A, Chemistry 14AE, Chemistry 20A, or Chemistry 20AH (introduction to chemistry courses) during the Fall 2024 quarter you must take the online Chemistry Diagnostic Test.

The exam will be available online beginning May 1, 2024. Please complete the exam before July 1, 2024so that your placement recommendation will be available during your New Student Orientation, thus allowing you to enroll in the appropriate course. There is no charge for taking this examination and the results are advisory.

Mathematics Diagnostic Test

Students planning to enroll in Math 1, 3A or 31A (calculus courses) for Fall Quarter must complete the Math Diagnostic Test between May 1, 2024and July 1, 2024.

Foreign Language

Some colleges within UCLA have a Foreign Language Requirement, but it is possible that you have satisfied it before starting at UCLA, especially if you completed IGETC. During your New Student Orientation, your New Student Advisor will guide you on any language placement exams to take if needed to take courses in a foreign language.

Music Theory Placement Exam

All students admitted as, or interested in being, a School of Music major must take the Music Theory Placement Exam.

You should also make an appointment to speak with the Music Department counselor before Fall Quarter enrollment begins. To contact the departmental counselor in the School of Music, call (310) 206-5002.

Immunization Requirements

All incoming UCLA students are required to complete a TB risk screening questionnaire and provide documentation of vaccinations before classes begin. Please go to the UCLA Immunization Requirement website for details. You can log in to complete these requirements through the Ashe Patient Portal. New students at higher risk for tuberculosis must provide documentation of either skin or blood testing for TB within 6 months preceding entry to UCLA. Those with a previous positive TB test should get a chest x-ray. The deadline to complete the requirement is October 1, 2024.

Insurance

Students are automatically enrolled in the campus medical insurance plan, UC SHIP(UC Student Health Insurance Plan) for a cost. UC SHIP is assessed as part of registration fees at each term (currently $1,067.49 each for Fall, Winter, and Spring quarters and may increase for the 2024/2025 school year. Spring Quarter enrollment includes summer coverage). Dental coverage is included as part of UCSHIP for undergraduate students.

If you already have health insurance that meets the University’s minimum requirements, you may waive UC SHIP and its associated fees. You must do this online during the fee payment period for each term. During the Fall Quarter fee payment period (July 1 – September 20) you will have the option to waive out of UC SHIP for the entire year. This option will submit the waiver automatically for Winter and Spring quarters.

To waive UC SHIP, go to the Ashe Center Website and choose “Insurance” and the “UC SHIP Waiver Application” page. We recommend you review the UC SHIP Pre-Waiver Worksheet (also found under “Insurance”) before continuing on to the site to UC SHIP.

UC SHIP information is available online at Student Health, under “Insurance.”

All registered students will have access to the Ashe Student Health Center, regardless of which insurance they have.

Mandatory Education Program

As part of UCLA’s commitment to creating and maintaining a healthy and safe environment for all students, all incoming students will complete a mandatory education program that includes the topics of Title IX – sexual assault, sexual harassment, domestic violence, dating violence, stalking, and bystander intervention. These programs are in accordance to state, federal, and University mandates (see below).

All newly admitted UCLA students are required to receive education and training on topics related to Title IX. This is accomplished by completing an online module related to the issue of Title IX.

Failure to meet this requirements by October 1, 2024 will result in a hold being placed on your records which will prevent you from registering and enrolling in courses.

ONLINE MODULE REQUIREMENT

In the summer you will receive an email from the online vendor with an invitation to complete the online Title IX module.

Before attending New Student Orientation remember to:

• Make sure to read through information pertaining to costs and fees for orientation.
• Complete the “Preparing for New Student Orientation” module.You will receive a link to the module with your reservation confirmation email.
• Submit your BruinCard photo by July 1, 2024. View photo requirements .
• Complete the Math Diagnostic Test by July 1, 2024 if needed.
• Complete the Chemistry Diagnostic Test by July 1, 2024 if needed.
• Submit all of your official final transcripts and test scores to UCLA Undergraduate Admission by July 1, 2024. Failure to submit these records may result in a hold preventing you from enrolling for Fall Quarter or a withdrawal of your offer of admission to UCLA.
• Get Tech-Ready – Please bring a fully charged device (and power cord) for activities – including enrollment – in the session if you have one. (eg. iPad, laptop, Chromebook, etc.). You will still be able to fully participate in the session if you do not have a device.
