An easy and delicious salted oven roasted pecans recipe. These roasted pecans are the perfect addictive appetizer for parties or gatherings. This simple recipe is ready in under 30 minutes!

I’ve said it many times, and truly believe it’s true.

Simple is best.

That’s the first thing that came to mind when I decided to share this salted oven roasted pecan recipe. I’m not totally sure it should be called a recipe, because it’s so simple…but we’re calling it that anyway! This is an old family recipe that I first tasted at my in-laws. My husband’s grandmother made these, and after she passed away, her daughters made them. They are a great addition to any gathering, and they make a lovely homemade gift.

Easy Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 275 degrees F.
  • Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper. (Optional)
  • Place pecans in a single layer on the baking sheet.
  • Cut 4 slices of salted butter, 1 tablespoon each.
  • Cut each butter pat into 6 small pieces.
  • Drop butter pieces evenly over pecan halves.
  • Evenly sprinkle the salt over the pecans/butter.
  • Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 10 minutes.
  • Remove from oven and stir pecans well until all are coated with butter and salt.
  • Return the pecans to one layer on the cookie sheet and bake for 8 to 10 minutes more.
  • Watch closely at the end so the pecans don’t get too done. You want them to be golden brown.
  • Remove from oven. Cool on cookie sheet to room temperature.
  • Store in an airtight container or resealable freezer bag.

Ingredient Notes

  • I use salted butter, but it’s fine to use unsalted if that’s what you have on hand. There is no need to add extra salt.
  • We like our pecans buttery, so I use 4 tablespoons of butter. If you would like toasted pecans that are a bit dryer, use less butter. The butter amount can definitely be adjusted to your own taste.
  • Any kind of salt can be used: kosher salt, sea salt, or pink himalayan salt.
  • To make a double batch, simply double the ingredients and use two baking sheets.

Variations

  • For a bit more flavor, replace 1/2 teaspoon of the salt with 1/2 teaspoon of seasoning salt.
  • Make cinnamon pecans by using a cinnamon sugar mixture instead of salt. Combine 2 teaspoons granulated sugar,1 teaspoon cinnamon, and a pinch of salt. Add to the pecans before baking.
  • For some extra zing, add a few shakes of chili powder or red pepper flakes, or sprinkle worcestershire sauce.
  • Drizzle maple syrup on the pecans before baking and cut the salt amount to 1/2 teaspoon.

Ways To Use Oven Roasted Pecans

  • Eat these delicious nuts just as they are!
  • Serve them on on your favorite salads, or use them in chicken salad.
  • Add them to a charcuterie board.
  • Use them as a topping for ice cream sundaes.
  • Layer yogurt, fresh fruit, and these pecan pieces to make yogurt parfaits.
  • For a salty snack, combine these pecans with other nuts, seeds, and dried fruit to make your own homemade trail mix.
  • Blend these pecans in a food processor to make pecan butter.
  • Crush salted roasted pecans and use them as a coating for chicken or fish. (One of our local restaurants serves pecan crusted chicken and it’s truly amazing.)
  • My favorite way to serve this easy recipe is to fill a beautiful small bowl. Use your favorite bowl, use something festive for the holidays, or use a wooden pedestal bowl.

That’s it! Roasting pecans with this oven method is so easy. All you need to make this delicious treat are three simple ingredients, and less than thirty minutes. If you love pecans, this is sure to become one of your favorite recipes.

FAQs

Why do you soak pecans before roasting? ›

Wet pecans allow the salt to stick easily to the nuts. Plus, soaking nuts helps neutralize enzyme inhibitors, which can harm your digestion, and reduce phytates, which decrease nutrient absorption. Just submerge your nuts in water while the oven is heating up and you'll be good to go.

What is the difference between roasted and toasted pecans? ›

Toasted pecans are not roasted pecans. Toasted pecans are cooked in a pan on the stove. I prefer to make roasted pecans in the oven because the pecans cook more evenly this way.

Is it better to roast pecans before baking? ›

Pecans are typically added to a recipe for added texture and flavor and toasting them will only improve both qualities. Toasting pecans (or any nut for that matter) not only makes them extra crisp and crunchy, but you'll get an even greater boost of nuttiness and flavor.

What is the best way to roast pecans? ›

Roast pecans in a 350-degree oven for 5 to 10 minutes (oven temperatures may vary, so keep an eye on your pecans). How to toast pecans in a pan? Toast in a dry skillet over medium heat for 2 to 5 minutes, stirring occasionally with a wooden spoon. Cool to room temperature.

How much salt do you soak pecans in? ›

Dry nuts usually yield about 1/4 cup to 1/2 cup more when soaked. To soak nuts, seeds, legumes and grains, dissolve 1 tsp sea salt in a bowl of 2-3 cups of pure, warm water. Add your ingredients. Make sure there is enough water to cover them about 2 inches.

What is the best temperature to roast pecans? ›

Oven: Spread them on a baking sheet and roast them in a 350°F oven. Stovetop: Toast them in a skillet over medium-high heat. Microwave: Microwave on HIGH for 30-60 seconds. Air fry: Pop them in your air fryer at 320°F.

Are roasted salted pecans good for you? ›

Roasted salted pecans are more than just a delicious snack; they are a nutritional powerhouse that can contribute to a healthy diet in various ways. From providing essential nutrients and antioxidants to promoting weight management and heart health, these nuts are truly worth incorporating into your daily routine.

Are oven roasted pecans healthy? ›

Absolutely! Pecans are full of healthy fats, antioxidants and fiber. Combined with the natural sweetness of maple, they're a healthier choice for a sweet treat or easy snack recipe.

Why are my roasted pecans bitter? ›

I started doing some research, and I found a little-known trick to making pecans taste sweeter: Soaking and rinsing the shelled nuts in lukewarm water before roasting removes the tannins and pieces of corky material that can cause pecans to taste bitter.

How do you get seasoning to stick to pecans? ›

Just toss nuts with oil, then powder, spread on a pan and bake. Doesn't get much simpler than that. Another alternative that has become popular is kettle roasted nuts. The nuts are cooked in a large kettle with an agitator to keep them from settling and burning.

How long to toast pecans at 350 degrees? ›

Toast Pecans
  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  2. Line a baking pan with parchment.
  3. Spread pecans on baking sheet.
  4. Toast for about five minutes or until you can smell the aroma.

How long does it take to roast nuts in the oven? ›

Spread them out in an even layer on a sheet pan, and pop them in a 350° oven. Generally speaking, lighter, more tender nuts like pecans, pistachios, and walnuts will take 6-8 minutes to get to a good place. Denser nuts like almonds, hazelnuts, and macadamias will take more like 8-10 minutes to finish toasting.

What is the best method for roasting nuts? ›

Hands down, the best method for toasting nuts is in the oven. In my experience, it produces the best flavor and yields the most even results, especially for large batches.

Why do people boil pecans? ›

Boiling pecans before cracking them can actually help prevent the shell from shattering. Here's how to boil them to loosen the shell but not cook the meat: ● Bring a large pot of water to a gentle boil ● Add the pecans and let cook for 10-15 minutes ● Drain and let cool ● Get to cracking!

Why are my pecans chewy? ›

Microwaving pecans can cause them to lose their freshness and flavor and may even give them a chewy texture, so it's best to let the pecans defrost on their own. Defrost the pecans right before you want to eat them or use them for cooking.

Do pecans need to be soaked? ›

Soaking nuts in salted water and then allowing them to dry gently, makes the nuts much more digestible and allows our bodies to better assimilate the nutrients that are in nuts. What is this? Plus, soaking and drying nuts helps them taste more delicious.

Do pecan nuts need to be soaked? ›

Your body can better absorb nutrients if you soak nuts and seeds. Nutrient-dense nuts and seeds include nutrient inhibitors that guard and guarantee the survival of those nutrients. By soaking nuts and seeds, you can reduce or get rid of the harmful and nutritious inhibitors that are absorbed into the water.

Are you supposed to soak pecans? ›

Long-soak nuts (almonds, pistachios, and hazelnuts) need at least 8 hours. Medium-soak nuts (pecans, walnuts, and Brazil nuts) are oilier and swell up quickly, so require less soaking time. Short-soak nuts (cashews, macadamias, and pine nuts) have the highest fat content and require only 2 to 4 hours soaking.

Why do you soak pecans in water? ›

By soaking nuts and seeds, you minimize or eliminate the nutritional inhibitors and other toxic substances as they are absorbed into the water. Without the inhibitors and toxic substances, the nutrients of the nuts and seeds are more readily available for absorption.
