16 Healthy Dog Treat Recipes - PatchPuppy.com (1)

I have nothing against store bought treats for dogs, but sometimes it’s fun to make a healthy, homemade dog treat that doesn’t have any preservatives or shelf stabilizers.

Each of these healthy dog treat recipes contains wholesome, real ingredients and has been field tested with my dogs – Millie and Tillie.

Fruit and Veggie Dog Treats

Contents

These treats in this section feature fruits and veggies. Dogs eat a lot of meat, but they are actually omnivores and as long as you avoid grapes, onions, and garlic including fruits and veggies in dog treats is part of a healthy diet.

Carrot & Banana Dog Treat Recipe

What’s really great about these banana carrot dog treats is that it has no added sugar since the bananas have enough sugar naturally.

Which is good, because… like anything else, moderation is the key for sugars and pups! Most dogs also LOVE bananas, so this healthy dog treat is very likely going to be a big hit.

Ingredients:

  • 2 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1/2 cup cornmeal
  • 1 bunch fresh carrots, finely chopped or grated
  • 2-3 fresh bananas, peeled and mashed
  • 1 beaten egg
  • 1/3 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar (*optional, we went without)
  • 1/2 cup cold water

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees and grease cookie sheets
  2. Combine dry ingredients (flour, cornmeal & *brown sugar) in a large mixing bowl, then incorporate carrots, bananas, egg, oil, and water until well blended into workable dough.
  3. Chop the carrots and bananas into large pieces, then slowly pulse them in thefood processor (like this one found on Amazon). This creates semi-regular sized carrot chunks and smooth banana mash to blend into the rest of the base ingredients.
  4. Flour your workspace and roll out dough to desired thickness. About a 1/2 inch thickness allows for some expansion once baked. Cut cookies to desiredshape and size.
  5. Place dog cookies on baking sheet and bake 35 minutes.
  6. After baking, turn oven off and leave cookies inside for another 30-45 minutes until crisp. This step is important to make sure your treats harden up, otherwise, they will remain like soft cookies.
  7. Once crisp, remove dog cookies from oven and let cool. Transfer to zipper bags or airtight containers and freeze to preserve freshness for your little one!

Since this recipe makes cookies, I like to use my bone shape cookie cutters which I bought on Amazon. They turn out super cute and my family doesn’t eat them by mistake. :)Thanks to KeyIngredient for publishing this great treat recipe.

Cheddar Seaweed Dog Treat Recipe

16 Healthy Dog Treat Recipes - PatchPuppy.com (2)

Let’s talk about Cheddar Seaweed Dog Treats!

With a name like that, I just thought I had to try them. I know — it’s a little different. And where do you even find seaweed???

Well, even in my little nowhere town, you can now find nori sheets in the specialty foods section! I found the seaweed in the ethnic foods with the Asian ingredients. I couldn’t believe it!

Ingredients:

Instructions:

  • 1. Preheat oven to 325 degrees Fahrenheit and line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.
  • 2. Mix all ingredients in a large bowl until well combined.
  • 3. Knead dough into ball and roll onto the parchment paper or silicone baking mat 1/4 inch thick and take a straight edge and cut the dough horizontally and then vertically to make a grid (I used a pizza cutter).
  • 4. Place on baking sheet and bake for 15 minutes. Turn off oven and open door slightly, allow the treats to harden in the cooling oven.
  • 5. Break into pieces and refrigerate.

What do you think? I like trying new things, so this recipe was a lot of fun!

I’ve also read that nori is super nutritious, they’re even calling it a superfood. So, I’m thinking of using the leftover seaweed in a salad or pasta.

Let me know what your Pups think!!

This recipe has is from a site called My Baking Addiction by Jamie. She makes them for her dog, Olive. You can check it outHERE.

Even though two of three of these recipes contained veggies & fruit (dog’s like sweet stuff too), the next four recipes are specifically fruit based. So that leads to another question that I get asked quite often.

Long Lasting Dog Treat Recipes

The longest lasting homemade dog treat recipes are almost always dog cookies and biscuits.

Because they’re relatively low in moisture they will keep for up to two weeks when stored in a sealed container. Just make sure that the treats are 100% cool before you store them in an airtight container – otherwise they can mold.

If you want to cover them while they are cooling simply wrap them loosely in a dish cloth so they can breathe.

Even with long lasting types of treats it’s a good idea to keep an eye on any healthy dog treat recipes you make at home, because they don’t have preservatives and won’t last as long as store bought treats.

These next 6 treats will typically last for a week or two in an airtight container.
